Sterling Silver vs Gold-Plated: What’s the Difference?

Sterling Silver vs Gold-Plated: What’s the Difference?

When you’re shopping for jewellery, you’ll often come across two popular options: sterling silver and gold-plated. Both are gorgeous and far more accessible than solid gold, but they have different qualities, care needs, and price points. Here’s a simple guide to help you decide.

What Is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper) to add strength. You’ll recognise it by the “925” hallmark. It’s a solid metal all the way through — meaning the colour and quality don’t wear away over time. Sterling silver is naturally bright and white, with a cool, classic shine.

What Is Gold-Plated?

Gold-plated jewellery has a base of another metal (at DanaVi Aurum, we use 925 sterling silver as our base) with a thin layer of real gold applied over the top. Our pieces are plated with 14K or 18K gold, giving them a warm, luxurious golden tone at a fraction of the price of solid gold.

Key Differences at a Glance

Sterling Silver Gold-Plated
Colour Cool silver/white Warm gold tone
Durability Very durable — solid throughout Plating can wear over time
Tarnishing Can tarnish but is easy to polish Plating protects against tarnish initially
Care Polish with a silver cloth Keep dry, avoid chemicals
Price Accessible More affordable than gold
Best for Everyday wear, longevity The gold look, special occasions

Which Should You Choose?

Choose sterling silver if you want a piece you can wear every day without worrying too much about care. It’s enduring, classic, and can be polished back to its original shine if it tarnishes.

Choose gold-plated if you love the warmth of gold and want a more affordable way to wear it. Treated with a little care (keep it dry, avoid harsh chemicals, store it well), gold-plated jewellery can look stunning for a very long time.

At DanaVi Aurum, we offer both:

All of our pieces combine quality craftsmanship with beautiful design — whichever metal you choose, you’re in good hands.
