How to Care for Gold-Plated Jewellery (and Make It Last)
Distribuie
Gold-plated jewellery is a beautiful, affordable way to enjoy the look of gold — but it does need a little care to keep its shine. At DanaVi Aurum, all our gold-plated pieces are crafted on a 925 sterling silver base with a generous 14K or 18K gold layer, giving you both quality and longevity. Here's how to make them last.
1. Keep It Dry
Water is the number one enemy of gold plating. Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, washing up, or exercising. Moisture — especially chlorinated or salt water — can cause the gold layer to tarnish and wear away faster.
2. Put Jewellery On Last
Perfume, hairspray, lotions and makeup all contain chemicals that can react with the gold plating. Always apply your beauty products first, let them dry, and then put your jewellery on.
3. Clean Gently
To clean your gold-plated pieces, use a soft, lint-free cloth (a microfibre cloth is ideal) to gently buff away any smudges or fingerprints. If a deeper clean is needed, dampen the cloth very slightly with warm water — never submerge the piece. Avoid abrasive cloths, toothpaste, or chemical cleaners.
4. Store Properly
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or jewellery box to prevent scratching. Exposure to air and humidity can speed up tarnishing, so keeping pieces in an airtight zip bag when not in use is a great habit.
5. Wear with Care
Gold-plated jewellery is not designed for heavy daily wear. Rotate your pieces and save your favourites for special occasions to extend their life significantly.
